Law Enforcement
Geometrix ActiveID systems have already begun to revolutionize identity
management for law enforcement in multiple ways, because the high
accuracy of FaceVision 3D facial biometrics delivers robust large-scale
AFIS systems and "Live Scan" capabilities based on facial forensics for
the first time.
In multiple county detention systems that previously had problems with
imposters, duplicate identities, and other erroneous prisoner releases
despite the use of fingerprint comparison, every entering prisoner is
now booked using a Geometrix ActiveID Biometric Identity Managment
System. During booking, 3D facial biometrics are checked against the
entire database to detect duplicate identities, a common ruse used to
avoid arrest for a more serious crime which also bogs down their systems
with multiple entries for the same individual. Every exiting prisoner's identity
is not only verified against their entering biometric, they are also
checked against the entire database to detect look-alike impostors,
another common ruse wherein long-term convicts attempt escape in the
guise of parolees. (See 2005 Statistics from Clarke County, Georgia)
After nearly 100,000 prisoner identity transactions through these systems,
erroneous releases have been eliminated, daily processing rate has
increased, prison staff morale has improved, and automatic tracking of
prisoners has proven viable. All at a suprisingly low cost. No wonder
our users are recommending the system to neighboring counties, and
considering additional immediate applications including staff access
control, managing prisoner access to areas within the facilities, surveillance
of visitors against the booking database, and tracking prisoner movement
between prisons, courthouses, and other locations. All solutions that we
can deliver today.
The
same Geometrix FaceVision 3D technology is being used like a "Live Scan" system
for the latest state-of-the-art US Government sponsored research into automating
the forensic measurements normally used to identify crime victims. The
goal is to establish courtroom-level identity confirmation or exclusion
from crime scene facial images, by comparing them against facial databases
like those our ActiveID systems already generate. Just as the loops and
swirls in fingerprints can be analyzed in detail by expert witnesses to solve
crimes or prove who committed them, so too can 3D facial information. All
it takes is an ever growing ActiveID database of prisoner data which can be
cost justified by the prisoner release control application alone.
The Law Enforcement power of ActiveID starts with the ActiveID Enrollment
System, the world's only 21st century booking solution. It acquires multiple
calibrated color images of the suspect that meet both FBI mug shot requirements
and international passport standards, with almost 10X the resolution. Within
seconds, automated FaceVision software extracts 3D facial shape from the
images, and stores the 3D mug shot in the database together with 2D mug shots,
fingerprints, and personal data. Any close identity matches already in the
database can be displayed to assist the user in ensuring that a dangerous
criminal is not posing as someone else - external databases such as those in
surrounding counties may be searched as well. Once this fused facial and
fingerprint AFIS is in place, it may be applied at every step in the
criminal justice system, from suspect identification to apprehension to
convicition to detention.
Identity management is also a core pillar of terror prevention and detection,
and terrorists leave us facial data more often than fingerprints (thanks to
surveillance video). No wonder Geometrix ActiveID solutions are under
evaluation for emerging passport, border control, and airport systems in
multiple countries, and considered a leading contender for enabling next-
generation international identity management networks. Just as acquiring
fingerprints at our borders yielded a large number of apprehensions, the 3D
faces in your criminal justice system will soon be connected to the people
moving through your public control points in real-time, and we will all
sleep better for it.
